What I Made this Christmas, Mommy and Me Silk Looks!

The kids are back in school people…I didn’t think the day would come! They’ve been out for nearly a month because of Christmas Break and the Snow-pocalypse 2025…While I’ve appreciated the break, I’ve really missed having a routine! So…what shall I do with this new found freedom?? Tell you all about my Christmas sewing of course!

Let’s begin with this little Silk Dupioni number. As you can see, Maria is not as little as she once was. She really growing up! So for her more “grown up” look, I chose a more mature fabric. This Navy Silk Dupioni does wonders for her eyes, sews up like a dream, and has such a great drape. This was my first time sewing with this type of fabric and it will DEFINITELY no the my last. I’ve actually already ordered more for another project!

Now, let’s talk pattern choices. This is the Children’s Corner Store Victoria with their Scallop Add on Pack collar, I also changed the sleeve to the one from their cult favorite Ruthie. I modified the belt by making three small tucks (1/4 inch) on a large piece of fabric and then cut out the belt to suit my liking. It is approximately 3 inch wide. I hand tacked the belt on top of the dress instead of following Children’s Corner’s directions and incorporating it into the side seams. There wasn’t much reasoning behind that decision, I just didn’t read the directions. I then gave a nod to the tucks in the belt by adding tucks to the skirt of the dress. Each tuck is 1 inch wide, beginning 1 inch above the hem.

For my look, I decided to use the exact same fabric and to use another Children’s Corner pattern! I used the out of print Skirts and Blouses pattern. Honestly, I used this pattern as a sort of suggestion. Any skirt pattern with a waistband would have been sufficient. For example, this simplicity pattern would be easy to modify to get the same look. I added a zipper in the back, increased the width of the waistband, interfaced the waistband and added a removable belt. I also made the pockets considerably bigger than they are in the pattern. I based this look after several high end skirts that had been frequent fliers in my Instagram feed. I also cut the silk dupioni on the bias to made the skirt hang the way I envisioned. By cutting it on the bias, it helps the fabric hang in more of a triangle, flow-y shape. See the video below

Sorry there are no fancy, well focused pictures of the skirt…Christmas was…well very Christmas-y this year and we all know the magic that mom’s have to make so iPhone video will have to do! Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas, and a Happy New Year. If we actually continue to go to school, I’ll give you the details on my boy’s outfits too!

ps: my shirt is a silk shirt from quince.com…I didn’t sew it but definitely recommend it!
