Picture Smocking on Corduroy, my Solution to Carpool Line Entertainment.

Its been a minute since I’ve done a blog post. Life has been wild around here! We’ve purchased land (nineteen acres) in my hometown and are slowly starting to take the steps toward building a house. I’ve found myself spending a ton of time in carpool lines with Robby and Maria in different schools and keeping up with John Luke is a full time job….see the picture below for his personality in-a-nut-shell.

I’ve discovered the best way to spend my time in the carpool line is smocking…otherwise I get sucked into social media and yucky news. Soooo these outfits are the fruits of the carpool.

I’m going to start with Maria’s. Her dress is a Children’s Corner Store Lee in Robert Kaufman “Hazelnut” feather wale corduroy. Mine is from farmhouse fabrics. They appear to be sold out at the moment but they are constantly getting new fabric in. The smocking plate I used is called “Tiny Trotters” by Cross Eyed Cricket. I used a combination of regular DMC floss and beautiful floche from Sarah Classic Sewing. I love using her floche braids because you don’t have to take them apart. They keep my threads organized and pretty. I wanted the smocking to be the focal point of the dress so I kept everything really simple. The collar is a white pique and is the only other fabric used on this one. These are her knee socks.

For John Luke’s I used the same feather wale corduroy and white pique and modified a Creations by Michie pattern to remove the pleats on the front. I did that by just folding the pleats into the pattern piece and using that as the pattern. I embroidered it using this monogram and these puppies.

And last but not least, Robby’s outfit is a Children’s Corner Store “Johnny.” Smocked with Ellen McCarn’s “Have a Ball” smocking plate. His shirt is store bought from Little English. I used regular DMC floss for the geometric and floche for the picture smocking.

Hope y’all enjoy these! They were fun to make…I suspect there will be lots of smocking in my future. What are some of your favorite winter plates? I’m thinking of trying this one next! I have a beautiful green feather wale that I’m planning to use for Christmas outfits 🙂
