Attaching Gathered Fabric to Flat Fabric-quick tip

Don’t you love it when people show you a quick tip that changes your sewing life? I absolutely love it. My sewing mentor recently dropped this little gem on me so I thought I’d share!

When attaching gathered fabric to flat fabric you can use this little tip to keep your gathers PERFECT. So next time you attach gathered trim to a sleeve, a skirt to a bodice, or gathered trim to beading, this is a quick trick that will make your life easier.

  • Gather your fabric (in my case trim) as normal. Making sure gathers are nice an straight and evenly spaced.
  • Lay a paper towel down on your work space.
  • Place a piece of stabilizer (this is stitch and ditch) on the paper towel
  • Spray the stabilizer with a spray adhesive (I used kk 2000)
  • Press the edge of the gathered fabric to the stabilizer.
  • Et VOILA! The edge of your gathered fabric is now stuck…proceed as normal and don’t worry about pinning-your gathers will remain perfectly spaced as your sew.
As you can see in this image, I am not sewing on top of the stabilizer. It is merely keeping my gathers gathered correctly as I sew the right sides of my beading and trim together.

I hope this changed your life like it did mine! Feel free to comment or message any questions!
