I have been on the lookout for a good Mommy and Me Dress pattern. And I think I found the one for us!
This Ikatee Louise Pattern has quite a few variations: with a collar, without collar, long sleeved, short sleeved, with a ruffle between the bodice and the skirt in the front and the back or without, and then any combination of those PLUS you can do it as a dress or a top. So I should basically never have to buy another pattern…right? Ha.
The pattern, instructions, and diagrams on this pattern are seriously impressive. I think it would be an appropriate pattern for a new(er) sewist with some experience putting a bodice and skirt together. So, if I were a brand new sewist, I’m not sure this would be the very first pattern I would buy to sew, but it might be my third or fourth.
I used a thin cotton double gauze for my dresses. Because of this, I decided to line and interface my bodice. I did so by basically using the construction of the bodice from the Children’s Corner Lee.
This pattern also calls for a long placket down the back of the dress. I’m not a huge fan of button holes so I opted to do a continuous bound placket in the skirt and only place buttons on the back bodice instead.
Again, this hack is a lot like the Children’s Corner Lee pattern so if you have that pattern or are familiar with it, you could refer to it to do the same.
As I continue to sew for myself I am amazed at how similar sewing for children and sewing for adults is. The darts may go in different directions occasionally but the majority of the basics are the same. Anyway, I’m supposed to be cleaning and decorating for a birthday party…time to stop stalling!
