Gemstone Quick Activity for Kids

Vase fillers. Whodathunkit? My kids love vase fillers…so random. I bought these plastic gemstones two days ago and my kids have already used them to do everything in the list below. I cannot get over how excited they’ve made them. Anyway, thought a parent out there may appreciate a new/cheap learning toy so here’s a quick post.

Activities with Plastic Gemstones:

  • Sort them into cups by color
  • Simple math problem manipulatives
  • Gemstone hunts (aka Easter egg hunt with gemstones)
  • Any type of sensory box- pop them in a rice box/play dough kit/or just in a bowl by themselves with tools
  • sort them into an ice cube tray
  • make patterns in the ice cube tray
  • Make patterns in a line
  • Line them up and count them
  • Hide them in a treasure box and pretend a pirate stole them. Make a treasure map to find them.
  • Use a flashlight in a dark room to show light refraction. The clear ones do show a “rainbow.” Don’t explain it, just let your child figure it out.
  • Pretend they’re ingredients in a cake, use kitchen utensils/muffin pan to mix them up and bake them.
  • Put them in water, predict if they’ll float or sink. Talk about why they sink.
