If you’ve been following along for some time you probably know my husband is hunter. A serious hunter. We have a giant elk hanging in my “sewing room” (basement) as proof. Because of this, my daughter is quite convinced that deer are the greatest animals on earth. She’s also convinced that she’ll be “getting a big buck” every time her dad goes hunting.
This little lady is going on year two of being a deer for Halloween. Last year I made her a Children’s Corner Lee in brown velvet, picked up deer antlers and a tail from Target’s Dollar bins, est voila, we had a deer. I was able to use this dress throughout the fall season as well. Nothing worse than a one-off costume.
This year I was not going to get away with being quite so abstract. She’s very aware of all deer features now. So our costumes (Robby is a deer too, of course) have more details and she came complete with hunters.
To make these costumes I ordered the shirt, onesie, and pants from Blanks Boutique. This is my favorite website for “plain” clothes. I have such a hard time finding them anywhere else…everything seems to be covered in glitter, a unicorn, or random characters. Blanks boutique never lets me down, has reasonable prices, and makes great quality clothes. I added the belly and fawn spots by cutting out sticky felt and just sticking them on to her shirt. I sewed last year’s tail onto the bottom of the shirt as well. Her antler’s are from Michaels and Robby got last year’s antlers.
If you’re looking for a quick, relatively easy, and sewing-free option for Halloween, this is a good one. I’m planning to pull those felt pieces off and put a fall-themed appliquĆ© on their shirts to get maximum use out of these “costumes.”
